I don't have any Model UN experience. Can I still excel in the club?
Many current outstanding club members have never had any Model UN experience prior to beginning the club. Once joining the club and attending a few conferences, students pick up Model UN skills rapidly. In addition, through participation and listening in on seminars given in the club, students can gain the skills they need to excel at Model UN. Don't forget, you can always look up helpful information on Model UN specifics through the Resources page.
How much do Model UN conferences usually cost?
Model UN conferences costs vary from event to event, however they typically range from $200-$400, depending on the distance of the conference from BCA. Keep in mind food is not included in the cost.
I can't pay for Model UN conferences. What should I do?
BCA Model UN club already subsidizes conference costs through bake sales and other fundraisers. Individual fundraising is, however, definitely available to students. Many students have sold food items like Choco-Pies with the help of BCA Model UN club, and advisors are always willing to help coordinate individual bake sales.
How does the Model UN awards system work?
During Model UN conferences, delegates that showcase skills of diplomacy, leadership, and global understanding are rewarded with recognition. By participating in Model UN, you’re able to debate to win many different awards. Verbal Commendations are occasionally given to the delegates who made a consistent effort to participate in committee. Honorable Delegate is awarded to those who show great effort and promise in committee. Outstanding Delegate is given to the delegate who effectively communicated with the rest of the committee and contributed progressive ideas. Best Delegate, along with a personalized gavel, is the award presented to the delegate who clearly had the greatest influence over the room and propelled committee forward into reaching a resolution. Each committee's chairs decide on which delegates receive what awards.
How much is the BCA Model UN club workload?
Please remember that leaders of the club are BCA students as well and we understand the average workload that BCA students receive on a daily basis from their required classes alone. The BCA Model UN club does not have any required homework, however students are highly encouraged to research their country's policy and the topic of debate on nights before a Model UN simulation is to occur during the club. Otherwise, students are just recommended to go to conferences, participate actively during the club, and make a genuine effort to learn all about Model UN.
